Twelve of the fourteen tools here are freemium, which tells you the business model: the free tier gets you hooked, the paid plan buys higher usage limits, access to the newest models, and heavier features like file analysis and deep research.

What actually differentiates them isn't the benchmark charts — it's how each one handles your tasks. Writing style, coding ability, context length, and tone vary enough to matter, and the only reliable test is running your real work through two or three of them for a week. Also weigh the ecosystem: Gemini hooks into Google Workspace, Meta AI lives inside WhatsApp and Instagram, and ChatGPT has the largest plugin and app ecosystem. Privacy posture differs too — if your conversations are sensitive, read the data-use policies before the feature lists.
