The main types of AI agents you will meet are personal agents, agents you text, browser and computer agents, open-source agents you run yourself, proactive agents, single-job specialists, and AI plus human helpers. They all take a goal and do the steps for you, but they differ in where they live, what they can touch and who is really doing the work.
Textbooks sort agents by how they think inside. That matters to engineers, not to you. This guide sorts them the way you will actually choose one: by the job, the place you talk to it, and how much control you keep. Each type comes with real examples from the directory, so you can see what it looks like in practice.
Why the type matters
The type tells you what an agent can reach, where you will talk to it, and what can go wrong.
If you are new to the idea, start with what an AI agent is. The short version: an agent takes a goal, plans the steps, uses tools and keeps going until the job is done.
Every agent shares that loop. What changes from type to type is the rest:
- Where it lives. An app, your messages, a web browser, or a computer of its own.
- What it can touch. Your inbox and calendar, websites you sign in to, a phone line, files on your computer.
- Who runs it. A company in its cloud, or you on your own machine.
- When it acts. Only when you ask, or on its own when it spots something.
Most real products mix a few types. The labels are a way to ask the right questions, not boxes a product must fit.
Personal agents
A personal agent works for one person and takes on everyday life: email, calendar, bookings, errands and longer goals.
This is the type most people mean when they say “AI agent”, and the one the AIcensus directory is built around. You give it a job in one sentence, it handles the steps, and it checks with you before anything you cannot undo.
Good personal agents remember you over time, like your usual table, your kid’s school or how you sign your emails. Many keep working in the background on longer goals and come back when they need a decision.

Muse takes on tasks and longer-term goals from the Muse app or WhatsApp, with its own secure computer to work on. Tab is a worker you text that books, calls businesses and buys with your approval. Pickle is an app you message, talk to or call, and it can make plans with your friends’ Pickles.
Good for: people who want one helper for many small jobs.
Agents you text
A texting agent lives in iMessage, WhatsApp, SMS or Telegram, so you use it like a contact instead of opening an app.
There is nothing to learn. You send a message, the agent replies, and the job gets done in the same thread you already use for friends and family.
The trade-off is that a chat thread is a small window. Long lists, documents and settings usually live on a web page the agent links to. Check how you review what it did and how you change its permissions.

Poke handles email, calendar, research and automations by text on several chat apps. Dunnit works overnight on your inbox and calendar over iMessage and sends you a morning brief. See all of them on AI agents on iMessage and AI agents on WhatsApp.
Good for: people who live in their messages and do not want another app.
Browser and computer agents
A browser or computer agent clicks and types through websites, or a whole computer, the way a person would.
Many jobs only exist on websites with no proper connection for software to use: booking forms, account settings, old portals. A browser agent handles them by doing what you would do, one page at a time.
Some are a web browser with an assistant built in. Others run their own browser on a computer in the cloud, so they keep going after you close your laptop. A few work across your files, apps and browser together.

Manus carries out whole tasks on a computer of its own. Our guide on how to choose an AI browser agent walks through the choices, including what happens to your logins.
Good for: jobs stuck behind websites, research across many pages, forms you keep putting off.
Open-source agents you run yourself
An open-source agent is software you install on your own computer or server, so you decide where your data lives and which AI model it uses.
The code is public, the software is usually free, and you run it. You connect it to the chat apps you use, give it the accounts it needs, and it works from your machine. Some can run all day on a small home computer or a rented server.
The freedom has a cost. You are the one who installs it, keeps it updated and keeps it secure. And while the software may be free, the AI model often is not: you usually bring a key from a model maker and pay for what you use, or run a model on your own hardware.

Hermes Agent remembers over time, runs scheduled tasks and works in messaging apps. OpenClaw runs on your own devices and you reach it through chat apps. ZeroClaw is one small program that can run on anything from a laptop to a tiny home computer. Our guide to private AI agents covers what “private” really means here.
Good for: people who care most about control and privacy, and do not mind some setup.
Proactive agents and on-request agents
An on-request agent waits for you to ask; a proactive agent watches for things and messages you first.
Most agents are on request. You ask, they act. A proactive agent reads what you let it read, such as your calendar and email, and speaks up at the right moment: a reminder with the link you need, a heads-up that a flight moved, a job already lined up for your yes.
Proactive help can feel like a real assistant, but it means the agent is reading more of your life, so the privacy questions matter more. A good one asks before it acts and lets you tune how often it pipes up.

Kiwi texts you first and books or orders when you say yes. Fambot reads school emails, updates the family calendar and sends a daily digest.
Good for: busy people and families who forget the small things, not the big ones.
Specialist agents
A specialist agent does one kind of job very well instead of trying to do everything.
Think of the difference between a personal assistant and an accountant. Specialists go deep on one area: your calendar, phone calls to companies, a family’s school logistics. Because the job is narrow, they often handle the edge cases better, and the permissions they need are easier to understand.

Good for: one painful job that keeps coming back.
AI plus human helpers
Some agents pair AI with trained people, so a human makes the phone calls and checks the hard parts.
AI handles the research and planning; a person steps in where software still struggles, like a long call with a customer service line or a negotiation that needs judgment. You describe the job once and get updates until it is done.
This type is usually paid, and it is slower than pure software for simple tasks. For jobs where a mistake is costly, a human in the loop can be worth it.

Types we leave out of the directory
Coding agents, business agents and plain chatbots are real, but they are not personal agents.
- Coding agents write, test and fix software. They are powerful tools for developers, not helpers for running your life.
- Business agents answer customers or handle refunds for a company. The company sets them up, not you.
- Chatbots answer and stop. They do not finish the job. Our post on AI agent vs chatbot has a one-line test that tells them apart.
How to pick the right type
Start from the job and where you want to talk to it, then pick the type that fits.
- Lots of small life jobs? Start with a personal agent.
- Do not want another app? Pick one you can text.
- The job lives on a website? Use a browser or computer agent.
- Privacy comes first? Look at open-source agents you run yourself.
- You keep forgetting things? Choose a proactive agent.
- One job that keeps coming back? A specialist will likely do it best.
- Calls and disputes where mistakes cost money? Try AI plus human help.
Whatever you choose, connect as little as possible at first, keep payments and messages behind your OK, and check the first few results. Our guide on how to choose a personal AI agent has more questions to ask before you sign up.
Common questions
What are the main types of AI agents?
For everyday use, the main types are personal agents, agents you text, browser and computer agents, open-source agents you run yourself, proactive agents, specialist agents, and AI plus human helpers. Many products combine a few of these.
What are the textbook types of AI agents?
Computer science sorts agents by how they decide: simple reflex, model-based, goal-based, utility-based and learning agents. That is useful for building agents. When you are choosing one, it helps more to ask what it can reach, where you talk to it and who runs it.
Which type of AI agent is best for beginners?
A personal agent you can text is usually the easiest start. There is nothing to install, you talk to it like a contact, and you can begin with one small job before connecting more accounts.
Are open-source AI agents free?
The software usually is. Running it is not always: you may pay for the AI model it uses, a server to keep it online, and your own time to set it up and keep it updated.
Is a chatbot a type of AI agent?
No. A chatbot answers and stops. An agent takes the next step and finishes the job. Some chat apps now include agent modes that can browse and complete tasks, and those parts count as agents.
Can one AI agent be more than one type?
Yes. A personal agent can also live in your texts, message you first and use a browser for you. The types describe features to look for, not strict categories.
Find your type
The fastest way to learn the types is to compare a few agents side by side.
Browse the AI agent directory to filter by where an agent runs, what it costs and whether it is open source, every listing checked against the maker’s own site. Or start in the place you already spend your day: agents on iMessage or WhatsApp.
Every agent card on this page comes from the live AIcensus directory and updates on its own. Listings were last checked on November 2, 2026. Each fact is checked against the maker's own site.
